Our approach

In Their Words is a storytelling project rooted in the fundamental belief that every person in our community has a story worth hearing and sharing. This project exists to create space for those experiencing homelessness to tell their stories on their own terms, in their own voices, with dignity and respect.

Why Stories Matter

Unlike other Amplify Utah projects, this is not journalism. It is community-based storytelling. The goal is not to investigate or uncover news. Instead, we are listeners — community members committed to creating authentic connections through the power of shared human experience. We recognize that each person's story is their lived reality, shaped by their unique perspective and journey. Whether influenced by mental health challenges, substance use, trauma, or simply the complex realities of life on the streets, these stories matter because the people telling them matter.

Our Commitment to ‘Do No Harm’

Every aspect of our project is designed with participant well-being at the center. We approach each storyteller with respect, patience and care for their safety and dignity.

Building Trust FirstWe don't rush into storytelling. We invest time in casual conversation, building genuine rapport, and ensuring participants feel comfortable and respected. Trust is earned, not assumed. We create non-coercive environments where participants never feel pressured to share more than they want.

Participant ControlStorytellers maintain control over their narratives. They decide what to share, how their story is told, and whether to include their name or image. If they’d like, they may ask to review written versions of their stories and can provide feedback or request changes. These are their stories — we are simply the vessel for sharing their experiences.

Ethical Foundation

Informed Consent & TransparencyEvery participant receives clear information about the project's goals, how their story will be used and their rights throughout the process. Consent is ongoing — participants can change their minds about participation at any time.

Authentic RepresentationWe are committed to avoiding stereotypes and ensuring that each person's complexity and humanity is honored. These are not "homeless stories" — they are human stories told by people who happen to be experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity.

Reciprocity & Community BenefitThis project exists to serve our storytellers and broader community. Stories are shared in ways that honor participants’ experiences while fostering greater understanding and connection within our community.

Beyond Individual Stories

Through this work, we aim to challenge assumptions, build empathy and remind our community that behind every statistic is a person with hopes, dreams, struggles, and wisdom to share. These stories become bridges — connecting those who might never otherwise meet, fostering understanding across different life experiences, and affirming the inherent worth and dignity of every community member.

In Their Words is more than a project—it's a commitment to seeing, hearing, and honoring the full humanity of our neighbors. Because in a healthy community, everyone's voice matters. Everyone's story deserves to be heard.
