Great Salt Lake Collaborative

In 2024, Amplify Utah partnered with the University of Utah's College of Humanities and Department of Communication and the award-winning Great Salt Lake Collaborative in a yearlong project to provide students with hands-on journalism experience working alongside professional media organizations. Through the capstone reporting class "Voices of Utah", students cover diverse beats and underreported issues while learning from journalists across the collaborative's dozen partner newsrooms. For the fall 2024 semester, students taking the university’s intermediate journalism course continued the project in collaboration with the Wilkes Center for Climate Science & Policy. 

Across two semesters, students created original journalism about communities impacted by the Great Salt Lake, seeing their work published across collaborative partners including The Salt Lake Tribune, Utah News Dispatch, and other media outlets, reaching audiences throughout Utah.
